News from the Helm-2018 Season

The 2018 season is here!

Greetings from the Marquette Yacht Club,

I hope everyone enjoyed a happy and healthy winter. We are looking forward to another exciting season at the MYC. Once the ice has thawed we will be putting in the docks and organizing a work bee for the club house and grounds. A few of the projects we plan on this summer are installing a new fence, leveling some grass out and finishing the rest of our beautiful docks. We appreciate all the hard work our volunteers did last summer and look forward to the same enthusiasm this year. We also plan on FUN! We will continue with our Open Class Races and maybe even add in some Cruising excursions. Of course there will be the White Rocks Race and the Independence Day Race. We are excited to have another year with the Marquette Junior Yacht Club on our grounds. It has been a joy to watch the kids at their lessons. The children are a big part of our future membership so let’s continue to welcome and encourage them. We also look forward to many warm summer days picnicking, partying and lounging about our club and on our boats. We will be putting together a calendar and posting it on our website

We have worked out the issues with our antiquated keycard entry system and are working to combine the annual MYC Membership card with your remote access card.  As we move towards this goal, all current cards will be deactivated and new ones will be issued which will also serve as your MYC membership card.  In the meantime, the keypad code will remain active until cards are distributed.

Our Treasurer will be sending out square invoices by email to those of you that stored your boats at the MYC grounds during the 2017-2018 winter months.  You can pay this amount online or print the invoice and mail it in with you membership dues.

Our dock committee has everything squared away for the coming season and asks that dock dues be paid by May 1st to ensure you retain your slip.  Please keep in mind that there are no open docks, if the dock committee has not contacted you about the 2018 season, please do not select or send payment for dockage.  A waiting list is in place for potential dock openings.  Tentative dates for the dock installation are April 28th or May 5th, weather permitting.

Please find the included membership form and remember you can pay online, with a check, or by square with our Treasurer. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you have. I am happy to help. We are truly blessed to have such a beautiful piece of Marquette Harbor to call our home. I am proud to be a member and I hope you are too!

Hope to see you all soon

2017 End of Season/Winter Boat Storage Information

Fall is upon us and it is time to think about when to vacate the dock, and how and where to store boats. All boats should be off the dock by October 25 in preparation for dock removal the following weekend. If you have a boat on the club grounds or plan to store your boat there, temporarily or all winter, please read the following:

Temporary storage of large boats.
Members may place boats at the club for short periods while transitioning from water to longer term storage options. Please inform me prior to parking on the premises so I can instruct you on the best placement so as not to obstruct other operations. In general, we will want short-term storage to be on the graveled areas in the NW corner of property, well away from east grassy area used for dock removal and storage. Any trailers should have the owners name on the tongue.

Winter storage of Large boats
Please inform me prior to placement of large boats for Winter storage. I will instruct you on best location for your boat based on your circumstances. For the most part, I will try to position boats under 30’ on the grass near the clubhouse. Please assure that your name is painted or affixed to the tongue of your trailer, and fill out the attached winter storage form (also available at and mail payment to MYC shortly after placement. Due to congestion during dock removal, the club may move your boat as needed.
Small boats (dinghies on rack and trailers)
Small boats may remain at the club for no additional charge until the docks come out (tentatively the last weekend of October), however trailers and ground stored boats will need to be moved away from the dock storage area. Please fill out winter storage form as noted above, and assure owners name is painted or affixed to trailer tongue. I will place a numbered registration sticker on the transom if you do not already have one.

See attachments, and if you have questions, please contact me.

MYC Shore-Side Dock Reconstruction Project

Finally! The shore-side dock reconstruction is complete. The old dock built in 91 served us well, but it was clearly time to rebuild it. Much of the structure, particularly where it touched the ground under the dock was rotten. The dock was reconstructed a bit higher to prevent that sort of deterioration. The north 57 feet of dock was most complex since we needed to pour concrete to affix the dock to as was done on the south sections. We also took this opportunity to improve the retaining wall in that area, making it look just like the south end. Thanks to Neil Lynch who successfully lobbied for this more expansive plan for the wall, and who secured and operated much of the necessary heavy equipment. Many members deserve thanks for contributing their time and sweat, including Jim Knape, Jeff Thorton, Al Strandlie, Wim McDonald, Dennis Nezich, Steve Slivenski, Ken Blood, John Harris, Pat Shinners, Matt Zavi, and probably a few I can’t remember now.

The 2017 season is here!

Greetings from the Marquette Yacht Club,

I hope this finds you in good health and enjoying the spring weather.  It is that time of year again and we are looking forward to another fantastic season at the club.  There is a lot to look forward to this year.  We welcome some new faces to our dock memberships and on the dry-land racks.  We are hoping with our new membership option to see more families enjoying and participating in club activities.

Of course, with the fun comes work.  Thankfully, we have a great crew of volunteers!  We are always looking for people who would like to volunteer their time and skills to projects around the club.  So, if you have some free time and would like to be involved, please let us know.  Our Web Maestro is doing a great job keeping our website up to date.  Please visit or our Facebook page to get the latest information on activities and events.  Soon the sun will be shining, a warm wind will be blowing, and the docks will be in!

Hope to see you all soon!
